I decided to check the bearings in my gearbox and am glad I did! Both bearings in the end cover were failing.
The mainshaft ballrace fitted was a 6301 2RS. Why a shielded bearing was used here I don't know, the shields showed signs of overheating (melting) and the bearing was very rough; on examination the tracks were very crazed. Replaced with a new SKF 6301.
The layshaft bearing in the kickstart is the needle roller type; the cage rings were cracked on both sides of the cage on what appears to be a manufacturing weld joint. Replaced with a new one. There is a tip in the bearings list on this site about the need to replace this bearing - well worth heeding!
I used Simply Bearings, both bearings in stock and overnight delivery.
