primary oil colour

Dirk
Hello,
i did change my primary oil and got frightened when i saw that "aluminish" grey colour of the Dexreon II that was clesr red when new......
i change my oil more then once, but more than one or two years ago cause of lack of time for makin miles.
I cannot believe that it looked like that the last time.
Pleas tell me what you think

It doesn't look right.  It looks like the primary chain has been rubbing on something.  Have you checked the primary chain adjustment?  If it is too loose it could be problem.  It is not difficult to remove the chain adjuster to check its condition.  Remember to back off the tension before removing the four small screws.

As Jon said plus which tensioner type have you got as earlier ones tend to flex and bend causing chain issues.
The chain should be adjusted to the point you just hear a hydraulic type whine with the engine running then back off about a quarter turn.
It should be quite quiet with no slapping noises.

Also I wouldn't use TQF or similar now as a number of them have modern additives that old clutches dont like.
I recommend a standard semi synthetic 10w40 motorcycle oil that is used in wet clutch applications such as Silkolene 4T

Hello,
and thank you for that info; i will try that setting method. My chain tensioner looks the same like the one that Chris posted a picture of in Arhturs thread.
As for the oil, i use Dexron II D, that specs were formulated ín the early '70s, the time our Silks were born.

But your concern seems true, cause I have been told by an ROWE-OIL representative, NOT to use modern spec. ATF oil in any automatic transmission, older than 1995, cause of the additives.
