Replacing Front Fork Oil

AFM_2

Hello,

I had to ask Kev for advice on how to re-fill my forks with oil after getting them re-chromed.  In case this is helpful to others I am pasting it below.  Three other points that may help:

1.  Since using the standard rubber gaiters didn't seem to have helped much I have decided to leave my forks naked.  This idea has not yet been road-tested, but Ceriani type, 38mm dust seals, seem to fit quite nicely.

2.  To avoid any damage to the front mudguard, I found it helped to start off by leaving the mudguard in-situ, dropping down both fork legs, plus mudguard as a unit and then detaching it afterwards.

3.  I can add to the other testimonies re Arthur Farrow's headlight bracket rubbers.  My old ones broke up during removal and the new ones were supplied in good time and fitted perfectly.  A little 3-in-1 oil on both the inside and the outside of the rubbers helped the forks slide up through them.

Anyway, advice from Kev is as follows:  Front forks, remove the allen bolts from blind hole, support bike, if not already at full travel set forks at full travel, i.e fully extended.  CAREFULLY  Remove circlip from inner part of fork stanchion if spring does not push out the plug  reinsert removed allen bolt,  pull out plug using allen bolt (beware spring not a high amount of force but enough), replace o ring if worn on plug. Fill leg with correct amount of oil. Refit in reverse order.
