Went into the garage this morning to see petrol dripping from the right hand side of the Silk. Strange I thought as the the bike leans to the left. The petrol was dripping from the oil pump/casing joint. Looked around and found I had left the petrol tap on after a run yesterday. The float valve had passed on the carb and dumped about a gallon of petrol into the engine. No overflow on the carb float bowl so it goes straight into the engine! Off with the oil pump and transfer port cover and the little plastic drain pipe from the ignition chamber. Petrol poured out of the little drain to the crankcase. Drained everything and pumped oil into the mains and the big and little ends via the transfer ports (pistons and bores look good!), warmed the crankcase with a hot air gun to evaporate any petrol, all in a well ventilated area. Checked the primary chaincase - more petrol, checked gearbox - lots more petrol. So oil changes and flushes carried out. The only place the petrol didn't get to was the outrigger bearing. Stripped and cleaned carb.; didn't seem too dirty as I have a filter on the petrol pipe.
Put it all back together and it started, oiled the plugs a few times from all the oil I had pumped in to the engine. Went for a very short ride and all seems well apart from the smokey bonfire trail I left behind!. Will change the primary chaincase and gearbox oil again to get ride of any contamination. Carb. overhaul now high on the priority list!
All because I inadvertently left the petrol tap on - be warned!
