Ignition timing

Does anyone know the correct ignition timing for a mk2 (engine number 80) in degrees at full advance?

Re: Ignition timing

Good question!  I take it you don't have the handbook which came with the bike.  It seems there were three sizes of carbs. fitted to the bikes 34mm, 36mm and 38mm.  My handbook for a late Silk with 38mm carb. is hand corrected from a handbook for a 34mm carb. bike.   The original settings quoted for the 34mm carb are 37.5deg before TDC or 0.3inches.  For the 38mm carb. it is only given as 0.2 inches before TDC.  To convert the 0.2 inches to degrees of rotation you need to know the length of the con rod.  Unfortunately this has been deleted from an earlier thread on this site.  However I have back calculate the length of the con rod from the 34mm carb. information.  Using this I get 35deg before TDC for the 38mm carb. I will have to check this out against the actual settings on the bike next time I check the timing - which isn't often!
Unfortunately I don't have a 36mm carb. bike handbook so don't know what the ignition advance is for this set up.  Smokey Paul may know as he has a 36mm carb. bike and I believe the original handbook.
Hope this helps.
